Sonny Stitt is a Jazz act. Their sound grew out of Pee Wee Crayton, Delmark Records, Horace Silver, Cedar Walton and Charlie Parker. Those roots explain a lot about how Sonny Stitt arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Hank Mobley, Dizzy Gillespie, Lee Konitz, Coleman Hawkins and Oliver Nelson, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Howard Roberts, Terrace Martin, Dick Morrissey, Maurice White and Fats Navarro, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 25 connections around Sonny Stitt, reaching back through Pee Wee Crayton and forward to Howard Roberts.
