W. C. Handy is a Blues act. Their sound grew out of Original Dixieland Jass Band. Those roots explain a lot about how W. C. Handy arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Barbecue Bob, Papa Charlie Jackson, Kokomo Arnold, Pinetop Smith and Trixie Smith, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Alfred Aloysous Bernard, Foxtrot, William Grant Still, Mamie Smith and Bessie Smith, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 16 connections around W. C. Handy, reaching back through Original Dixieland Jass Band and forward to Alfred Aloysous Bernard.
