Al Johnson is an act on the Starverb influence map. Their sound grew out of Leo's Sunshipp and Norman Connors. Those roots explain a lot about how Al Johnson arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as The Jones Girls, L.T.D., Gwen McCrae, Brothers Johnson and The Whispers, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Jean Carn, Tata Vega, Sharon Redd, The Whispers and Gayle Adams, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 38 connections around Al Johnson, reaching back through Leo's Sunshipp and forward to Jean Carn.
