Lakeside is a Funk act. Their sound grew out of Steve Arrington, Zapp, Shalamar, The Whispers and Carrie Lucas. Those roots explain a lot about how Lakeside arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Slave, Con Funk Shun, The Whispers, The Bar-Kays and The Gap Band, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Ty Dolla Sign and Raise!, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 40 connections around Lakeside, reaching back through Steve Arrington and forward to Ty Dolla Sign.
