Alchemist is a Dubstep act. Their sound grew out of Pink Floyd, Frank Zappa, Venom, Cathedral and Fear Factory. Those roots explain a lot about how Alchemist arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Sadist, Morbid Angel, Blotted Science, Control Denied and The Devin Townsend Band, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Snowgoons, araabMUZIK, Easy Star All-Stars, Shihad and Meshuggah, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 20 connections around Alchemist, reaching back through Pink Floyd and forward to Snowgoons. Follow any of those threads to keep travelling the influence between bands and genres on Starverb.
Background
Alchemist was an Australian progressive metal band from Canberra whose style combined death metal, progressive rock, psychedelic, Eastern, Aboriginal and electronic influences. The band formed in 1987 and released six studio albums, an EP and a compilation album. Work began on a new EP in 2010 but the band went on an indefinite hiatus and then split up. They are the only group to appear at every Metal for the Brain festival, an event they ran and organised from 1996. Alchemist also played at the Big Day Out and toured Europe several times.
