◇ image via WikipediaBilal
Bilal is a House and Rhythm and blues act. Their sound grew out of Jay Dee, Robert Glasper, Floetry, Sa-Ra Creative Partners and Jazzyfatnastees. Those roots explain a lot about how Bilal arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Dwele, D'Angelo, Musiq, Rahsaan Patterson and Eric Roberson, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Ari Lennox, dead prez, Denzel Curry and DRAM, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 50 connections around Bilal, reaching back through Jay Dee and forward to Ari Lennox.
