Doin' Time

Trip hop
Trip hop

Doin' Time is a Trip hop act. Their sound grew out of Herbie Mann, George Gershwin, Robert Lee, Beastie Boys and Ini Kamoze. Those roots explain a lot about how Doin' Time arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Mariners Apartment Complex, West Coast, Love You like a Love Song, Kiss Me More and Somebody That I Used to Know, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into The Pharcyde, Lana Del Rey, Snoop Dogg and Wyclef Jean, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 21 connections around Doin' Time, reaching back through Herbie Mann and forward to The Pharcyde. Follow any of those threads to keep travelling the influence between bands and genres on Starverb.

Background

"Doin' Time" is a song by American band Sublime, appearing as the closing track on their self-titled third album (1996). The lyrics tell of a cheating girlfriend, whose infidelities and poor treatment of her lover make him feel like he is in prison. It was released as the album's fourth and final single on November 25, 1997; the disc contained alternate versions of the song by Wyclef Jean and the Pharcyde. Additional versions appeared on the post-Bradley Nowell compilation album Second-hand Smoke and several bootlegs, including one with Snoop Dogg.
