Beastie Boys is a Hardcore punk and Hip hop act. Their sound grew out of Check It Out, Clouds Taste Metallic, Miho Hatori, Paul Oakenfold and Instruction. Those roots explain a lot about how Beastie Boys arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Public Enemy, Eric B. & Rakim, De La Soul, Jurassic 5 and Boogie Down Productions, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Smash Mouth, Linkin Park, Sum 41, m-flo and Transplants, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 162 connections around Beastie Boys, reaching back through Check It Out and forward to Smash Mouth. Follow any of those threads to keep travelling the influence between bands and genres on Starverb.
