Esperanza Spalding

Funk
FunkHouseJazz

Esperanza Spalding is a Funk and House act. Their catalogue also touches Jazz. Their sound grew out of Guinga, Leo Genovese, Gretchen Parlato, Samba em Prelúdio and Laura Mvula. Those roots explain a lot about how Esperanza Spalding arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as José James, Cécile McLorin Salvant, The RH Factor, Robert Glasper Experiment and Robert Glasper, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into The Warning and Nikki Yanofsky, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 33 connections around Esperanza Spalding, reaching back through Guinga and forward to The Warning. Follow any of those threads to keep travelling the influence between bands and genres on Starverb.
