Snarky Puppy

Snarky Puppy is an act on the Starverb influence map. Their sound grew out of Susana Baca, Louis Cole, Kormac, Lalah Hathaway and Victoria Canal. Those roots explain a lot about how Snarky Puppy arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Mark Lettieri, Cory Wong, The Fearless Flyers, Lettuce and Dirty Loops, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Erykah Badu, Marcus Miller, Justin Timberlake, Stanley Clarke and Kirk Franklin, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 39 connections around Snarky Puppy, reaching back through Susana Baca and forward to Erykah Badu. Follow any of those threads to keep travelling the influence between bands and genres on Starverb.

Background

Snarky Puppy is an American jazz fusion band led by bassist Michael League. Founded in 2004, Snarky Puppy combines a variety of jazz idioms, rock, world music, and funk and has won five Grammy Awards. Although the band has worked with vocalists, League described Snarky Puppy as "a pop band that improvises a lot, without vocals".
