Gene Autry is a Country act. Their sound grew out of Cindy Walker, You Are My Sunshine, Fats Domino, Jimmie Rodgers and Hank Williams. Those roots explain a lot about how Gene Autry arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Perry Como, Jimmie Rodgers, Jim Reeves, Randy Travis and Patti Page, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Billy Walker, Johnny Bond, Jimmy Wakely, Hank Ballard & The Midnighters and Burl Ives, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 37 connections around Gene Autry, reaching back through Cindy Walker and forward to Billy Walker.
