Jim Hall is a Jazz act. Their sound grew out of Paul Desmond, Charlie Christian, Coleman Hawkins, Lester Young and Barney Kessel. Those roots explain a lot about how Jim Hall arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Wes Montgomery, Barney Kessel, Bill Evans, Art Farmer and Charlie Byrd, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Margo Guryan, Waiting for the Sun, John McLaughlin, Pat Metheny and Bill Frisell, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 26 connections around Jim Hall, reaching back through Paul Desmond and forward to Margo Guryan.
