Kelly Willis is a Folk act. Their sound grew out of Chuck Prophet, Kinky Friedman, Elvis Presley, Nanci Griffith and Lyle Lovett. Those roots explain a lot about how Kelly Willis arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Buddy Miller, The Bottle Rockets, Jack Ingram, Lee Ann Womack and Lucinda Williams, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Tom T. Hall, Billy Joe Shaver, Dwight Yoakam, Vince Gill and Aaron Neville, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 20 connections around Kelly Willis, reaching back through Chuck Prophet and forward to Tom T. Hall.
