Noor Jehan is a Classical act. Their sound grew out of Mohammed Rafi and M. Ashraf. Those roots explain a lot about how Noor Jehan arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Mehdi Hassan, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, Nazia Hassan and Ali Zafar, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Lata Mangeshkar, Mehdi Hassan, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Asha Bhosle and Madonna, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 17 connections around Noor Jehan, reaching back through Mohammed Rafi and forward to Lata Mangeshkar.
