Madonna is a Alternative rock and Contemporary R&B act. Their catalogue also touches Dance-pop, Electronic and Folk. Their sound grew out of David Bowie, Debbie Harry, Chrissie Hynde, Im Nin'alu and Talvin Singh. Those roots explain a lot about how Madonna arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Dannii Minogue, Christina Aguilera, Paula Abdul, Melanie C and Jennifer Lopez, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into India, Alanis Morissette, Lady Gaga, Britney Spears and Backstreet Boys, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 370 connections around Madonna, reaching back through David Bowie and forward to India. Follow any of those threads to keep travelling the influence between bands and genres on Starverb.
