Paul Bley is a Jazz act. Their sound grew out of Jeff Williams, Jimmy Giuffre, Sonny Rollins, Coleman Hawkins and Annette Peacock. Those roots explain a lot about how Paul Bley arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Jimmy Giuffre, Bill Evans, Brad Mehldau, Wayne Shorter and Terje Rypdal, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Jaco Pastorius, Yitzhak Yedid, ECM Records, Paul Motian and Ornette Coleman, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 31 connections around Paul Bley, reaching back through Jeff Williams and forward to Jaco Pastorius.
