◇ image via WikipediaOrnette Coleman
Ornette Coleman is a Jazz act. Their sound grew out of Galaxie 500, Paul Bley, Albert Ayler, Freddie Hubbard and Kind of Blue. Those roots explain a lot about how Ornette Coleman arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Wayne Shorter, Sonny Sharrock, Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk and Lee Konitz, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Jerry Garcia, Jamaaladeen Tacuma, The Shape of Punk to Come, John Coltrane Quartet and The Pop Group, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 56 connections around Ornette Coleman, reaching back through Galaxie 500 and forward to Jerry Garcia.
