Penny Ford is a Funk act. Their sound grew out of Sharon Redd, Chaka Khan, Soul II Soul, Mariah Carey and Zapp. Those roots explain a lot about how Penny Ford arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Val Young, For Real, June Pointer, Jasmine Guy and Lisa Stansfield, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Natalie Cole, The Gap Band, Chaka Khan and Snap!, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 17 connections around Penny Ford, reaching back through Sharon Redd and forward to Natalie Cole. Follow any of those threads to keep travelling the influence between bands and genres on Starverb.
