Mariah Carey is a Contemporary R&B and Dance-pop act. Their catalogue also touches Hip hop and Pop. Their sound grew out of Karen Clark Sheard, The Chaos Chapter: Freeze, Meri Kuri, Steven Stanley and Forever Your Girl. Those roots explain a lot about how Mariah Carey arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Whitney Houston, Toni Braxton, Destiny's Child, Christina Aguilera and Céline Dion, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Rihanna, Jolin Tsai, Kimbra, Wanessa Camargo and Silentó, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 237 connections around Mariah Carey, reaching back through Karen Clark Sheard and forward to Rihanna. Follow any of those threads to keep travelling the influence between bands and genres on Starverb.
