Simon Phillips is a Jazz act. Their sound grew out of Frank Farian, Eddie Jobson and Welcome to My Nightmare. Those roots explain a lot about how Simon Phillips arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Dave Weckl, Billy Cobham, Mark Lettieri, Lee Ritenour and Snarky Puppy, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into The Best, Frankie Banali, Les Binks and Dirty Loops, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 16 connections around Simon Phillips, reaching back through Frank Farian and forward to The Best.
