The Clean

The Clean is an act on the Starverb influence map. Their sound grew out of The Enemy and The Fall. Those roots explain a lot about how The Clean arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Guided by Voices, Bailter Space, Yo La Tengo, Mission of Burma and Josef K, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Yo La Tengo, Pavement, The Courtneys and Bailter Space, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 22 connections around The Clean, reaching back through The Enemy and forward to Yo La Tengo. Follow any of those threads to keep travelling the influence between bands and genres on Starverb.

Background

The Clean was a New Zealand indie rock band formed in Dunedin in 1978. They have been described as the most influential band to come from the Flying Nun label, which recorded many artists associated with the "Dunedin sound", and one of the first bands to be described as "indie rock".
