Pavement is a Rap act. Their sound grew out of Chrome, Bill Fay, The Smashing Pumpkins, Sonic Youth and The Clean. Those roots explain a lot about how Pavement arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Stephen Malkmus, Guided by Voices, Dinosaur Jr., Yo La Tengo and The Halo Benders, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Tapes 'n Tapes, Yuck, Pity Sex, Further and Dirty Three, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 90 connections around Pavement, reaching back through Chrome and forward to Tapes 'n Tapes. Follow any of those threads to keep travelling the influence between bands and genres on Starverb.
