Vanessa da Mata

Vanessa da Mata is an act on the Starverb influence map. Their sound grew out of Curumin, Ben Harper & The Innocent Criminals and Milton Nascimento. Those roots explain a lot about how Vanessa da Mata arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Marisa Monte, Tribalistas, Paula Toller, Cássia Eller and Djavan, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Seu Jorge, Daniela Mercury, Ben Harper, Celia Mara and Maria Bethânia, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 25 connections around Vanessa da Mata, reaching back through Curumin and forward to Seu Jorge. Follow any of those threads to keep travelling the influence between bands and genres on Starverb.
