Yma Sumac is a Folk and Jazz act. Their catalogue also touches Pop and Rock. Their sound grew out of Xavier Cugat. Those roots explain a lot about how Yma Sumac arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Pérez Prado, Xavier Cugat, Lhasa de Sela, Astor Piazzolla and Odetta, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Vanessa Paradis, Violetta Villas, Robin Thicke, Anna von Hausswolff and Belinda Carlisle, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 19 connections around Yma Sumac, reaching back through Xavier Cugat and forward to Vanessa Paradis.
