Odetta is an act on the Starverb influence map. Their sound grew out of Ella Fitzgerald, Harry Belafonte and Shame and Scandal. Those roots explain a lot about how Odetta arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Elizabeth Cotten, Pete Seeger, Nina Simone and Buffy Sainte-Marie, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, Mavis Staples, Janis Joplin and Harry Belafonte, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 48 connections around Odetta, reaching back through Ella Fitzgerald and forward to Bob Dylan. Follow any of those threads to keep travelling the influence between bands and genres on Starverb.
