Witchfinder General was an English heavy metal and doom metal band from Stourbridge. They were part of the new wave of British heavy metal and have been cited as a major influence on the doom metal genre. They were named after the 1968 British horror film Witchfinder General, itself based upon the infamous witchhunter known as Matthew Hopkins.

Acid Bath is an American sludge metal band from Houma, Louisiana, that was active from 1991 to 1997. Regarded as one of the first and most influential sludge metal bands, they combined a doom metal foundation with elements of hardcore punk, death metal, gothic rock, blues, grunge, and Southern rock to create their sound. The band released two albums, When the Kite String Pops and Paegan Terrorism Tactics, in 1994 and 1996, respectively, but broke up following the death of bassist Audie Pitre in a January 1997 traffic collision. They announced a reunion in October 2024.

Tiamat is a Swedish metal band founded near Stockholm in 1990 and led by Johan Edlund. To date they have released ten studio albums. The band went through a number of stylistic changes in their earlier releases before settling on gothic metal. Under Edlund's leadership, the band would modify their style with influences ranging from Black Sabbath, Mercyful Fate, Candlemass, Pink Floyd and King Crimson combined with Sumerian lyrical themes. H. P. Lovecraft's writings also appear to have influenced Tiamat's thematology, a development consistent with a broader trend in death metal culture.

Castle Rat is an American doom metal band formed in Brooklyn, New York, in 2019. Known for their "medieval fantasy doom metal" aesthetic, they blend traditional doom and heavy metal with theatrical live performances inspired by Black Sabbath and Frank Frazetta's fantasy artwork. Led by vocalist and rhythm guitarist Riley Pinkerton, the band gained recognition for their debut album Into the Realm (2024) and elaborate stage shows featuring their nemesis, "The Rat Reaperess".
