Athlete is a Indie rock act. Their sound grew out of Grandaddy, The Flaming Lips, The Beach Boys and Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. Those roots explain a lot about how Athlete arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Thirteen Senses, Doves, Feeder, Snow Patrol and Hard-Fi, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into George Ezra, Shura and Stoney, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 30 connections around Athlete, reaching back through Grandaddy and forward to George Ezra. Follow any of those threads to keep travelling the influence between bands and genres on Starverb.
