Jazz
Jazz

Branford Marsalis is a Jazz act. Their sound grew out of Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers, Herbie Hancock, Youssou N’Dour, Sonny Rollins and Wynton Marsalis. Those roots explain a lot about how Branford Marsalis arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Joshua Redman, Joe Lovano, Michael Brecker, Chick Corea and Coleman Hawkins, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Public Enemy, Shanice, Dave Matthews Band, Dave Matthews and Bob Dylan, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 39 connections around Branford Marsalis, reaching back through Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers and forward to Public Enemy.
