Dave Matthews is a Rock act. Their sound grew out of Blue Man Group, Jesse Welles, Cabas, Branford Marsalis and Daniel Lanois. They run in the same orbit as Dave Matthews Band, O.A.R., Dispatch, Ben Harper & The Innocent Criminals and Jack Johnson, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Vieux Farka Touré, Nickel Creek, Charlie Sexton, John Mayer and Jack Johnson, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 42 connections around Dave Matthews, reaching back through Blue Man Group and forward to Vieux Farka Touré.
