Dave Matthews Band is a Rock act. Their sound grew out of State Radio, The John Butler Trio, Bob Schneider, Sixto Rodriguez and Hugh Masekela. They run in the same orbit as Hootie & The Blowfish, O.A.R., Toad The Wet Sprocket, Barenaked Ladies and The Wallflowers, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Days of the New, Ben&Ben, Howie Day, Carbon Leaf and Alberta Cross, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 70 connections around Dave Matthews Band, reaching back through State Radio and forward to Days of the New.
