David Johansen is a Blues act. Their sound grew out of T. Rex, Nona Hendryx, Hubert Sumlin, Sylvain Sylvain and The Modern Lovers. Those roots explain a lot about how David Johansen arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as New York Dolls, Dave Edmunds, Mott the Hoople, Faces and Ace Frehley, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into The Who, Hubert Sumlin, Sarah Dash, David Sylvian and Ramones, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 51 connections around David Johansen, reaching back through T. Rex and forward to The Who.
