◇ image via WikipediaElvis Costello
Elvis Costello is a Punk rock and Rock act. Their sound grew out of Dancing Queen, Larkin Poe, Anthology of American Folk Music, Mark Bedford and The Essential Johnny Cash. Those roots explain a lot about how Elvis Costello arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Elvis Costello & The Attractions, Squeeze, Joe Jackson, The Jam and Ian Dury, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Bridgit Mendler, Sum 41, Simple Plan, Smash Mouth and Eels, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 166 connections around Elvis Costello, reaching back through Dancing Queen and forward to Bridgit Mendler.
