◇ image via WikipediaDuke Ellington
Duke Ellington is a Gospel and Jazz act. Their sound grew out of June Christy, Jimmy Rushing, The Real Tuesday Weld, Louis Armstrong and Eubie Blake. Those roots explain a lot about how Duke Ellington arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Count Basie, Benny Goodman, Thelonious Monk, Miles Davis and Coleman Hawkins, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Quincy Jones, Dave Grusin, Jeffrey Osborne, Sir Duke and Love Her Madly, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 118 connections around Duke Ellington, reaching back through June Christy and forward to Quincy Jones. Follow any of those threads to keep travelling the influence between bands and genres on Starverb.
