Erma Franklin is a Gospel and Rhythm and blues act. Their sound grew out of Jackie Wilson, Freddie Scott and Van McCoy. Those roots explain a lot about how Erma Franklin arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as James & Bobby Purify, Patti Drew, Edwin Starr, Sugar Pie DeSanto and Doris Troy, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Made in Heaven, Big Brother and the Holding Company, Janis Joplin and Beverley Knight, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 30 connections around Erma Franklin, reaching back through Jackie Wilson and forward to Made in Heaven. Follow any of those threads to keep travelling the influence between bands and genres on Starverb.

Background

Erma Vernice Franklin was an American gospel and soul singer. She recorded the original version of "Piece of My Heart", written and produced by Jerry Ragovoy and Bert Berns in 1967, for which she was nominated for a Grammy Award. A cover version of the same song was recorded the following year by Big Brother and the Holding Company, with lead vocals by Janis Joplin. Franklin was the elder sister of singer Aretha Franklin.
