Freda Payne is a House and Jazz act. Their catalogue also touches Rhythm and blues. Their sound grew out of The Funk Brothers, Margo Guryan, Lamont Dozier, Billy Griffin and Ella Fitzgerald. Those roots explain a lot about how Freda Payne arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Honey Cone, Chairmen Of The Board, The Dramatics, Joe Simon and Jr. Walker & The All Stars, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Bonnie Tyler, Tony Bongiovi, The Stylistics, Dennis Coffey and Jaki Graham, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 41 connections around Freda Payne, reaching back through The Funk Brothers and forward to Bonnie Tyler.
