Doris Troy is a House act. Their sound grew out of Madeline Bell and James Brown. Those roots explain a lot about how Doris Troy arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Irma Thomas, Maxine Brown, Barbara Lewis, The Exciters and Major Lance, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into The Soul Sessions, Elly Jackson, Patti LaBelle, Ciara and The Sweet Inspirations, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 52 connections around Doris Troy, reaching back through Madeline Bell and forward to The Soul Sessions. Follow any of those threads to keep travelling the influence between bands and genres on Starverb.
