Tavares

Tavares is an act on the Starverb influence map. Their sound grew out of Bernie Worrell, Sam Dees, The Friends of Distinction, Johnny Bristol and Hall & Oates. Those roots explain a lot about how Tavares arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Van McCoy, Rose Royce, The Spinners, McFadden & Whitehead and The Dramatics, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Take That, Paulinho da Costa, Hold It Don't Drop It and Jennifer Lopez, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 35 connections around Tavares, reaching back through Bernie Worrell and forward to Take That. Follow any of those threads to keep travelling the influence between bands and genres on Starverb.

Background

Tavares is an American R&B and soul music group composed of five Cape Verdean-American brothers. Some were born in New Bedford, Massachusetts, and Providence, Rhode Island, and they would move back and forth between the two cities throughout their childhood. They are best known for their hits "It Only Takes a Minute" in 1975, and "Heaven Must Be Missing an Angel" in 1976.
