Gorilla Zoe is an act on the Starverb influence map. Their sound grew out of Jeezy, Teddybears, Young Dro and OJ da Juiceman. Those roots explain a lot about how Gorilla Zoe arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Yung Joc, Trillville, Lil Scrappy, YoungBloodz and Shawty Lo, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Yung Joc, Saigon, Plies, Rich Boy and Joell Ortiz, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 40 connections around Gorilla Zoe, reaching back through Jeezy and forward to Yung Joc. Follow any of those threads to keep travelling the influence between bands and genres on Starverb.
Background
Alonzo Keith Mathis Jr., better known by his stage name Gorilla Zoe, is an American rapper from East Point, Georgia. He joined the Bad Boy Records hip hop group Boyz n da Hood in 2006, following the departure of its lead member, Jeezy. His first album with the group, Back Up n da Chevy (2007) was met with lukewarm critical and commercial reception, leading to their subsequent disbandment. He then signed with Bad Boy, an imprint of Atlantic Records in a joint venture with Block Entertainment as a solo act to release his debut studio album, Welcome to the Zoo (2007).
