Gram Parsons is a Country act. Their sound grew out of Al Perkins, Barry Goldberg, I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry, Linda Ronstadt and Chrissie Hynde. Those roots explain a lot about how Gram Parsons arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Emmylou Harris, Jerry Jeff Walker, Lucinda Williams, Rodney Crowell and Uncle Tupelo, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Elite Hotel, Pieces of the Sky, Colter Wall, Ashley Monroe and Orville Peck, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 50 connections around Gram Parsons, reaching back through Al Perkins and forward to Elite Hotel.
