Merle Haggard is a Country act. Their sound grew out of Jeannie Seely, Ferlin Husky, Peter Wolf, Hank Cochran and Reggie Young. Those roots explain a lot about how Merle Haggard arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Johnny Paycheck, Conway Twitty, Buck Owens, Bobby Bare and George Strait, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Rob Thomas, Suzy Bogguss, Giles Corey, Keith Whitley and Old Crow Medicine Show, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 102 connections around Merle Haggard, reaching back through Jeannie Seely and forward to Rob Thomas.
