Harry Chapin is an act on the Starverb influence map. Their sound grew out of Carly Simon and Woody Guthrie. Those roots explain a lot about how Harry Chapin arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as The J. Geils Band, Seals & Crofts, Al Stewart, Three Dog Night and Crosby, Stills & Nash, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Jill Sobule, Ugly Kid Joe, Rita Coolidge, The Verve Pipe and Gordon Lightfoot, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 33 connections around Harry Chapin, reaching back through Carly Simon and forward to Jill Sobule. Follow any of those threads to keep travelling the influence between bands and genres on Starverb.
