Indie rock

Heatmiser is a Indie rock act. Their sound grew out of Elvis Costello, Rush and Ringo Starr. Those roots explain a lot about how Heatmiser arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Quasi, Eric's Trip, Jets to Brazil, Stephen Malkmus and The American Analog Set, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into The Decemberists, Death Cab for Cutie, The Dandy Warhols, Sleater-Kinney and Kurt Travis, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 29 connections around Heatmiser, reaching back through Elvis Costello and forward to The Decemberists. Follow any of those threads to keep travelling the influence between bands and genres on Starverb.

Background

Heatmiser was an American rock band, formed in Portland, Oregon, in October 1991. Consisting of Elliott Smith, Neil Gust, Brandt Peterson and Tony Lash (drums), they were known for their well-crafted lyrics and songs often featuring the juxtaposition of melancholic and cheery words and melodies. Elliott Smith's pop-oriented songs provided a contrast to Neil Gust's darker compositions, yet both songwriters explored themes such as anger, alienation, loneliness and despair.
