Iris DeMent is a Country and Folk act. Their sound grew out of John Prine and Borderline. Those roots explain a lot about how Iris DeMent arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Lucinda Williams, Emmylou Harris, Rodney Crowell, Jerry Jeff Walker and Justin Townes Earle, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Julia Jacklin, John Rzeznik, Kate Rusby, Trampled by Turtles and David Byrne, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 17 connections around Iris DeMent, reaching back through John Prine and forward to Julia Jacklin.
