Merle Travis is a Country act. Their sound grew out of Blind Blake and Jimmy Wakely. Those roots explain a lot about how Merle Travis arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Jimmie Rodgers, Tex Ritter, Dolly Parton, Hank Thompson and The Carter Family, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Luther Perkins, Grandpa Jones, Chet Atkins, Earl Hooker and Lonnie Mack, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 24 connections around Merle Travis, reaching back through Blind Blake and forward to Luther Perkins.
