National Health is a Progressive rock act. Their sound grew out of Soft Machine, Egg, Hatfield and the North and Jimmy Hastings. Those roots explain a lot about how National Health arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Hatfield and the North, Soft Machine, Matching Mole, Gong and Henry Cow, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Deftones, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 18 connections around National Health, reaching back through Soft Machine and forward to Deftones.
