Soft Machine

Progressive rock
Progressive rockPsychedelic rock

Soft Machine is a Progressive rock and Psychedelic rock act. Their sound grew out of Jimmy Hastings, Carnival of Light, Manfred Mann, The Wilde Flowers and Pink Floyd. Those roots explain a lot about how Soft Machine arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Gong, Hatfield and the North, National Health, Matching Mole and Robert Wyatt, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Kim Fowley, Henry Cow, John Greaves, The Raincoats and Tomorrow, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 45 connections around Soft Machine, reaching back through Jimmy Hastings and forward to Kim Fowley. Follow any of those threads to keep travelling the influence between bands and genres on Starverb.
