Susana Baca is an act on the Starverb influence map. Their sound grew out of Celso Duarte and Simón Díaz. Those roots explain a lot about how Susana Baca arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Totó La Momposina, Mercedes Sosa, Cesária Évora, Lhasa de Sela and Lila Downs, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Snarky Puppy, Charlie Hunter, Luaka Bop, Calle 13 and Totó La Momposina, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 22 connections around Susana Baca, reaching back through Celso Duarte and forward to Snarky Puppy. Follow any of those threads to keep travelling the influence between bands and genres on Starverb.
