BluesDiscoFunk

Sylvia Robinson is a Blues and Disco act. Their catalogue also touches Funk, Hip hop and House. Their sound grew out of Mickey Baker, Bo Diddley, Al Green, Serge Gainsbourg and Jane Birkin. Those roots explain a lot about how Sylvia Robinson arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Patti Austin & James Ingram, New York City, The Voices of East Harlem, Carolyn Franklin and The Masqueraders, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Naughty By Nature, Moby, Ike & Tina Turner, The Moments and Shirley & Company, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 27 connections around Sylvia Robinson, reaching back through Mickey Baker and forward to Naughty By Nature.
