The Daktaris is an act on the Starverb influence map. Their sound grew out of Mulatu Astatke and Fela Kuti. Those roots explain a lot about how The Daktaris arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as The Poets of Rhythm, Antibalas Afrobeat Orchestra, The Budos Band, The Shaolin Afronauts and The Sugarman 3, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Antibalas, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 30 connections around The Daktaris, reaching back through Mulatu Astatke and forward to Antibalas. Follow any of those threads to keep travelling the influence between bands and genres on Starverb.
Background
The Daktaris, whose name means "doctors" in Swahili, were a funk and Afrobeat studio project from Brooklyn, United States. After recording the album some of its members have gone on to be part of the Dap Kings and Antibalas and features veteran Cameroonian drummer Jojo Kuo on drums, vocals, and percussion. The name of the group was inspired by the TV show Daktari, an American family drama series that aired on CBS between 1966 and 1969, a fictional Study Center for Animal Behavior in East Africa.
