◇ image via WikipediaFela Kuti
Fela Kuti is a Afrobeat and Highlife act. Their catalogue also touches Jazz. Their sound grew out of Bernie Worrell, Tony Allen, Lester Bowie, Dennis Bovell and James Brown. Those roots explain a lot about how Fela Kuti arrange songs and choose their tones. They run in the same orbit as Ebo Taylor, The Lijadu Sisters, Tony Allen, Antibalas Afrobeat Orchestra and Manu Dibango, sharing audiences, venues and reference points rather than a straight line of influence. Their influence carried into Talking Heads, Common, Ayọ, Shaboozey and Nneka, where the same ideas turn up rearranged for a later generation. Altogether the chart holds 90 connections around Fela Kuti, reaching back through Bernie Worrell and forward to Talking Heads.
